YM2149 mastering - my thoughts I personally thought that the popstars MP3s sounded fine from the start when they were first uploaded. When I cut Atari tracks for the 2 Preromanbritain vinyls I did no special mastering except for volume normalisation. As we all know the YM2149 is a square wave chip, and square waves give a very loud percieved sound for a given volume level. The guy mastering 'Full On!' said it was the loudest recording he ever heard. When playing live with Ataris I always notice that the sound from chip tracks really cuts though compared to 'normal' music. But there are things you can do to reduce noise, and these are, turn off the TV/monitor when recording, and don't move the mouse. Basically I dont think special mastering is required, just recording from the sound chip. I would be interested to hear other thoughts on this, because my personal opinon is that Atari chip tunes are all 'naturally' well produced. gwEm

about the fresh mp3.. i don't think the recordings are terrible.. but yea nice.. how about organizing a popstars mastering competition!? that would perhaps release the best result then.. as i said b4, if desired.. then i can try .. some people say my mastering is so/too fucking loud.. however tao: werde dir einen verweis zu einem beispiel mailen (falls es gut geht und falls ich irgendwo platz finde;) greez

even if i wouldn't mind to do an interesting cover-demo, i'd prefer the fantasy-game soundtrack... dma: you're right, looks funny. that's what it looks like, when you're doing everything more or less in a hurry. maybe i should take my time in the future to do such things... the mp3-problem: sorry for that. i could fix it, if anybody could offer the songs in better quality (please still 96Khz mono) please get in touch with abyss@creamhq.de that would help :) regards, Tao

Yes.. it would be fun to hear the YMrockerz do music for a imaginary game :-) And why not combine it with the David Whittaker suggestion and do "music for an imaginary game in David Whittaker style".

And since i have been recording ST music today i have could aswell make a recording of Tao's "Groupie", i think it is sounding much less bassy/muffled than the one that can be downladed here. http://shozan.sytes.net/~meth/atarist/groupiemono.ogg

Here is an example of a tune recorded using mic-in on my soundcard: http://shozan.sytes.net/~meth/atarist/milhouse-tambumbiremix.mp3 And for comparison here is another tune wich i presume is recorded using line-in, i took it from Nectarine sceneradio, it sounds much cleaner: http://shozan.sytes.net/~meth/atarist/505-tambumbi.mp3

I could not hear any highpitch noise, but thats probably because i don't have listened to the mp3's using earphones, only using my stereospeakers. What i ment by worse quality is the high bass sound, i used to have that problem when i recorded some ST tunes using MIC-IN and thru a 15 meter audiocable. Anyway there is no need to re-record the music only for me since i can make my own recordings if i need them ;-)
