you could also look at routs from the early PC demo scene which use PC speaker or a selfmade printer port DAC

yerz, CPU power to play protracker mods depends on so many more factors than sample rate. i am definately not the one to answer your question in detail, as i dont have an in depth technical knowledge. it depends on factors such as the protracker effects supported, the type of CPU being used, wether or not DMA hardware is present, how the mixer is implemented etc etc... AN Cool from the Carebears claims that the mixer routine for TCB Tracker (an early sample tracker on Atari) uses 20% CPU for mixing the four channels down to a single 8 bit channel. using the 3 4 bit channels in the YM2149 to implement a single 8 bit channel is rather simple - by using 2 channels playing identically to form the 4 MSBs of the 8 bit channel, and the other channel to play the 4 LSBs... Concievably a 4 bit playback routine would save some CPU. He has sample code on his page: http://home.earthlink.net/~chhome/tcbtracker.html although TCB tracker is rather simplistic by todays standards, although i believe its sample rate is something like 12kHz and it sounds ok. To show you the wide variation though - the Lance protracker replay on DHS uses 30% CPU for 50kHz playback on STe, because of its DMA playback hardware - even though the CPU is still at 8MHz. DHS also recently featured a 40kHz playback software for plain STs with no DMA hardware. thats the long answer - the short answer is : i dont know ;-> i guess your project is to implement a protracker player on Spectrum? if so good luck.

Hi there! A question for Atari ST masters: how much of CPU's power do You need to play MODs on AY/YM? Now I mean exactly: how much CPU's power while playing MODs in quality of 8000 Hz AND - how much CPU's power while playing MODs in quality of 12000 Hz????? My question is related with Pro Tracker program. Kind regards, Yerz

remmus: hehe, been living under a rock for the last 20 years, eh? ;) no, the sound comes from the built-in ym2149 soundchip in the atari st (computer from the mid 80's). the software varies, some hardcore people even code their own software. for your intel machine (dunno if it is working on apple yet...) you should probably try gareth morrises vst-plugin (if you run a compatible software for those plugs), or try atari st emulation (the ym2149 emulation was not "flawless" last time i checked so it might not be a good idea tracking in emulated mode though).

I been listening to your music lately, and I wonder how do you make them? I cant find the software to compose these type of music, or it is not a software? Sorry for sounding a little noobish, I've been living under a rock lol
