lotek style: hmm perhaps, my atari is LOUD and lives only 5 minutes from the german border :^)

all i could think of was me mixing mad max' tunes in a small record shop in town last winter. only bout 10 people there ,) but in fact there was never an event under the name of ymr here.

lars: there are rumours in circulation that someone in belgium want's to organize a ym festival.
as i remember chatting about that with a guy from brussel at http://micromusic.net

how are you getting on with the ay chip? wouldn't mind modding one of my ST for such experience!

stu / lotek
guess I confused something about the live act.
Anyway: Anything planned for the next time?

Hi all together!

So at least I could cause some reactions... great ;-)

To clear things up a bit:

The YM2149 is _absolutely_ compatible in any aspect to the AY3-8910.
Both chips were used in Atari ST machines; Atari just used what was offered by the market at those times.

Of course (lotek style) the scene will need new tools or routs to use the extended features of this enhanced AY8930. Sorry, I´m not a coder on the ST (I´m more into embedded systems/hardware).

Meanwhile I scanned all pages of the old data book and I´m ready to send this to anyone interested (coders first please).

Some (not all) enhanced features include:
* 16bit frequency registers (2x 8bit) instead of 12bits only. This is for all 3 voices, of course.
* 8bit noise period register (instead of 5)
* Duty cycle registers for all voices - meaning that you can modify pulse:pause ratio (kind of PWM feature). I think you could utilize this for flanger effects done by hardware!
* (best of all, I think:) now all three voices can have independent wave-forms with independent
periods. This might lead to more flexible buzzer effects (but I might be wrong, as I´m no
musician nor coder).

* To toggle between "standard/compatibility" mode and "enhanced" mode, the upper three
bits of the waveform selection register is used (that means that all current routines that
"abuse" those bits by using them as scratchpad-bits will lead to strangest behaviour in the
future with the AY8930. CODERS: Please check and debug your routines to prevent this!!)

(Crazy Q):
I found this page myself that you quote, it´s from a kind of soundcard museum.
It´s right, the soundchip is "weak", but we all love the even weaker YM, don´t we??

BTW: Where/when is the next live act done by ymrockerz? I missed the one in Basel (which is a
shame, living near Freiburg!).

Hey Lars...

sorry for not replying yet... I got your mail... but ehm yes Im just a lazy bastard :) Well if you
modify one ST for me... would you also modify a chipeditor so that we can use it? Im not a
coder at all.... So an ST with an AY inside would be no use for me without an editor... ;)

found this on the net ....

Sound Master
----------------
Covox (1989)
Made in USA

Synth: AY8930 (Microchip)

This card never became popular and only a handful of games supported it. Sierra On-Line didn't even bother to support it (to my knowledge). It has a 8-bit DAC, which was great at the time, and two 8-bit digital gameports, which was incredible and a must in those days (the analog gameport on a PC is badly designed and has many shortcomings). But lack of support and a weak soundchip made this card a loosy choice.

i was talking about the ay-3-8910 and not the 8930 version. btw, was that chip ever used in a computer? hmm... or in an arcade perhaps.
